Oscar-Winning ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Special Effects Supervisor Reuniting With Denis Villeneuve For ‘Dune’

As Denis Villeneuve is likely hard at work casting for his upcoming Dune feature adaptation, another key crew member has joined the science fiction epic.

HN Entertainment has learned that Gerd Nefzer is expected to be Dune’s special effects supervisor, reuniting him with director Denis Villeneuve after working on Blade Runner 2049 that landed him an Oscar.

Gerd’s other film credits include Red Sparrow, The Girl In The Spider’s Web, Bridge of Spies, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Captain America: Civil War, A Good Day To Die Hard, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1-2, and The Monuments Men.

Nefzer was part of the group that won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for their work on Blade Runner 2049. He’s expected to join fellow Oscar-winners Framestore’s Richard R. Hoover (6 Underground) and Double Negative’s Paul Lambert (First Man) who will act as visual effects supervisors on the film.

Set on the planet Arrakis, we find ourselves exploring the story of two warring galactic royal families House Atreides and House Harkonnen. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated, his son Paul and wife Lady Jessica escape only to be adopted by the Fremen, who becomes Paul’s personal army against the Harkonnen as he develops powers from the spice, a substance that extends life and powers interstellar travel. A tangled web of royal intrigue is revealed with the Emperor and other cosmic powers pulling the strings while attempting to erase house Atreides.

The rest of the crew includes Rogue One: A Stars Story cinematographer Greig Fraser, Arrival/Sicario production designer Patrice Vermette, and Dunkirk/The Dark Knight stunt coordinator Thomas Struthers.

Filming is confirmed to be taking place at Orgio Film Studios in Budapest, Hungary with an expectation that filming could begin sometime in March. Also, as I’ve previously reported the production is considering filming on location in the country of Jordan. A location that has been recently used for science fiction/fantasy films Prometheus, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Martian. This makes Jordan a perfect possible locale to double for the sand dunes of the desert planet of Arrakis.

Timothee Chalamet is reportedly set for the lead role of Paul Atreides, while Rebecca Ferguson is in talks to play his young mother Lady Jessica Atreides. They’re also currently seeking a non-white actress for the role of Paul’s Fremen love interest Chani.

A release date for the new Dune reboot film has yet to be made official.
