‘Joker’ Crosses A Billion At The Box Office & Becomes The First R-Rated Film To Do So

The Joker movie has finally crossed a billion at the global box office making the DC Comics standalone film the very first R-rated movie to make a billion dollars according to Forbes.

A huge feat considering the movie made the money without the help of markets like China (R-rated movies can’t be released in the Middle Kingdom).

Warner Bros. must be super pleased given the film had a budget estimated to be around $55 million and they’ve now made money hand-over-fist, which was considered a risky movie given that the film took a darker perspective with and removed the spectacle aspect of recent DC films.

Actor Joaquin Phoenix has talked up his desire to return for a sequel, but nothing official has been announced (only time will tell).

Director Todd Phillips also is open to the idea of a sequel.

Warner Bros. is still betting big on their regular lineup with Aquaman and Shazam! sequels in development, Matt Reeves’ The Batman (June 25th, 2021) starring Robert Pattinson and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam (December 22nd, 2020) begin shooting next year, and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (August 6th, 2021) is currently filming in Atlanta, Georgia.

Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey is the next DC Comics release on February 7th, 2020 and then we have Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5th, 2020.

The Flash movie recently added IT director Andy Muschietti, but with Ezra Miller shooting Fantastic Beasts 3 next year means that filming on that won’t likely begin until late 2020 or early 2021.

Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks — the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he’s part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker.
