The actual numbers for the weekend’s box office are in via BoxOfficeMojo and it looks like Avengers: Endgame lives to fight another day holding onto the top spot for the third weekend in a row earning an impressive $63.3 million and inching closer to the domestic gross record at $723.7 million.
Endgame’s worldwide total is at $2.489 billion edging towards breaking Avatar’s box office record.
Ryan Reynolds’ Detective Pikachu landed in the second spot, the live-action Pokemon film from Legendary had a respectable showing as well at $54.3 million, slightly less than projected. The number isn’t earth-shattering but will certainly guide the film to a profitable zone if it continues to keep making money over the next couple of weekends.
Detective Pikachu’s total global earnings for the moment is $166.7 million on a budget of $150 million, which would suggest there is a clearly a path for Legendary making a profit and continue with sequels as a second film is already reportedly in development stages.
On the horizon, next weekend is the release of Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and is looking to capture the mature demographic with the third installment in the action franchise. It’s not looking to do massive numbers but should provide some wiggle-room for Detective Pikachu to have a second successful weekend before Disney’s Aladdin rolls in.
