Earlier this year it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a new iteration of Willy Wonka. With Paddington director Paul King in talks to helm the project. As it turns out, the movie is actually happening, and there are currently two actors at the top of the list to star.
According to Collider, Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) and Donald Glover (Solo: A Star Wars Story) are currently on the shortlist to star as Willy Wonka in what is being described as a prequel. Heyman himself also talks about the movie a bit:
“We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy—when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?… It’s how does he get there? So we’re playing around with that.”
The movie is reportedly set to focus on Willy Wonka’s life before the ill-fated trip to his chocolate factory that saw a bunch of children disappear under horrible circumstances.
Maybe the story of how he discovered and hired all the Oompa Loompas from Loompaland, which was mentioned by original Wonka Gene Wilder in the first movie? Whatever it focuses on, with this potential Wonka film in the pipeline, we are very intrigued to see how it pans out.
