In Captain Marvel, it appears she’s going to be one of the most powerful figures to ever appear in the MCU. During an interview with EW back in September 2018, producer Kevin Feige stated, “She is more powerful than any character we’ve introduced thus far. So that alone tells you that there’s a reason Nick hit that button at the end [of Infinity War], when he realized that they were up against something far bigger than they had ever been up against before. And having her on your side is hopefully going to change the balance of power in a way that they desperately need.”
These comments are high praise for her power level considering Thor with Stormbreaker seemed to redefine power levels for characters not wielding an Infinity Gauntlet. However, even with this praise, there’s a deeper reason Captain Marvel serves as a threat unlike others towards Thanos. The reason is rooted in her affiliation with the Tesseract aka Space Stone, which appears in Captain Marvel. While its main abilities are rooted in the manipulation of dimensional space and motion, it also emits special energy unique to the other Infinity Stones.
This energy can be harnessed, replicated, and even used to contribute to the empowerment of others as we saw from HYDRA’s experiments with Loki’s Scepter. HYDRA’s experiments with the Mind Stone led to the awakening of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s abilities which was the explanation for how Scarlet Witch could destroy the Mind Stone in Avengers: Infinity War.
With trailers showing the explosion that gives Carol her abilities, it looks like Carol will share a link to the Space Stone’s energies in a similar way to how Scarlet Witch is connected to the Mind Stone. Beyond this, one of Carol’s most undervalued abilities is energy absorption. Through energy absorption, she’s able to unlock her Binary form which has been shown in various trailers promoting her breaking free of her limitations. If used to their potential against Thanos, Captain Marvel serves as a threat against Thanos simply because she could absorb Infinity Stone energy.
She could do this to make herself more powerful and then use that energy to unlock her Binary form which may allow her to destroy the Infinity Stones and/or Infinity Gauntlet. If Carol is utilized in this capacity by The Avengers, it would definitely make her the X-Factor compared to other characters. The interesting battle after Captain Marvel vs Thanos would then be a friendly match between Captain Marvel and Thor with Stormbreaker.
