Forbes snuck a potential production update on WB’s new Supergirl feature film in their article covering the confirmation that Robert Pattinson closed his deal to play Bruce Wayne in The Batman.
The tidbit suggests that filming on a Supergirl movie could begin in early 2020, although the studio has yet to officially announce a director for the film which seems a little odd unless that announcement is coming soon.
Supergirl is tentatively expected to start production in the first quarter of 2020, and I suspect we’ll hear casting information start to circulate in a few months.
There had been some chatter that the studio was interested in director Reed Morano for the film at one time, but the only person officially attached is screenwriter Oren Uziel (Cloverfield Paradox, Detective Pikachu 2, 22 Jump Street).
Previous reports had suggested that Supergirl would be a surrogate for a Superman film after a deal for Man of Steel 2 couldn’t be put together.
The original Supergirl movie was released back in 1984 and has become a punchline of sorts as it didn’t match the quality or success of the Superman films.
Warner Bros. has yet to announce that Supergirl is moving beyond the scripting phase, but a director announcement could show that the studio is getting serious about the DC Comics project.
