Thanks to the massive box office success of New Line Cinema’s IT remake, Stephen King adaptations have been making a huge comeback and Warner Bros. has a direct sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining on the way as well IT: Chapter 2.
Doctor Sleep sees a grown-up Danny Torrance played by Ewan McGregor still dealing with his trauma and abilities, while a group of evil people that can shine called The True Knot, who are led by Rose The Hat played by Rebecca Ferguson are going around killing others with the power.
The studio has released a first-look teaser trailer today, which is a little longer than you’d expect from a teaser and you can watch below.
“Doctor Sleep” continues the story of Danny Torrance, 40 years after his terrifying stay at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and newcomer Kyliegh Curran star in the supernatural thriller, directed by Mike Flanagan, from his own screenplay based upon the novel by Stephen King.
Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.”
Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before—at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
“Doctor Sleep” stars Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars: Episodes I, II & III,” “T2 Trainspotting”) as Dan Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson (the “Mission: Impossible” films, “The Greatest Showman”) as Rose the Hat, and Kyliegh Curran, in her major feature film debut, as Abra. The main ensemble cast also includes Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Jocelin Donahue, Alex Essoe and Cliff Curtis.
This teaser trailer certainly wants audiences to know that Doctor Sleep is a direct sequel to The Shining to the point of splicing in what looks like scenes from the original film or possibly reshot versions. Along with a synth score that I assume is aimed to remind us this is firmly placed in the world of Kubrick.
I don’t have a complete impression of the film from this trailer, but I do have some hope it will end up being a compliment to the Kubrick film if anything else.
Stephen King has made it known he wasn’t the biggest fan of Stanley Kubrick’s film and I’m a bit shocked he ignored how great the execution was, tinkering with the source material or not.
Warner Bros. has given Doctor Sleep a release date of November 8th.
