While James Wan is reportedly waiting on a solid script for an Aquaman sequel before agreeing to direct it another project is now in development. According to TheHollywoodReporter now says that horror film spin-off titled The Trench is in development stages at the studio with Warner Bros. hiring Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald penning the script with James Wan producing.
Warners has hired newbie scribes Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman. Wan and Peter Safran will produce the project, titled The Trench, which would be much more modestly budgeted than the normal DC superhero tentpole.
The Trench creatures are rather recent arrivals to the Aquaman lore, having been introduced in the comics only in 2011 when DC did a revamp of its entire publishing line. They are revealed to be part of the kingdom of Atlantis but when it sunk, inhabitants who were cut off from other survivors and evolved into ravenous monsters.
They also add that the main cast members from Aquaman will not appear in The Trench.
Details about the project have yet to be revealed but I’m kind of hoping it’s sort of inspired by the Alien/Aybss knock-off Leviathan from 1989 starring Peter Weller and Ernie Hudson. It’s a personal favorite of mine and James Wan seems to be a fan of homaging movies from the 80-90s.
On the dark and forbidding ocean floor, the crew of a deep-sea mission rig discovers a sunken freighter that harbors a deadly secret: a genetic experiment gone horribly wrong. With a storm raging on the surface and no hope of rescue, the captain and his team are propelled into a spine-tingling battle for survival against the ultimate foe – a hideous monster that cannot die…and lives to kill!
