Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for The Dark Crystal prequel series from the Jim Henson Company titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and it almost brings me back to my childhood wonderment when I first watched the original on VHS.
The Henson Company may have pulled off something very very special here and in the age of digital effects, it’s exciting/refreshing to see the return of practical puppet effects as pretty as CG animated stuff can feel cold and hollow at times in comparison to stuff actually shot in camera (such as puppets and stop motion).
Based on The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting-edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.
The voice cast is something to behold as well.
The Gelfling voice actors include Taron Egerton as Rian, Anya Taylor-Joy as Brea, and Nathalie Emmanuel as Deet, Helena Bonham-Carter, Natalie Dormer, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Theo James, Harris Dickinson, Toby Jones, Eddie Izzard, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Caitriona Balfe, and Shazad Latif. Voicing the Skeksis and Mystics will be Mark Hamill, Simon Pegg, Jason Isaacs, Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, Harvey Fierstein, Ralph Ineson, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Donna Kimball.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance drops August 30th on Netflix.
They’ve also released a stunning teaser poster for the series as well.
