Netflix has dropped the final trailer for their third season of Stranger Things and it looks like the group is going to have a lot more problems from The Upside Down than with the previous two seasons.
Creatures from the Upside Down are making their way back and are possessing people during the kids’ summer break and with the addition of a new mall, it’s become the Hawkins hangout spot. It remains to be seen if it’s a group of people being taken over by the Upside Down beasties but it looks like they’re trying to fake-out, who is ultimately being controlled.
What’s interesting is that The Duffer Brothers are seemingly taking some cues for their mall setting from the 1986 laughably bad horror flick Chopping Mall.
We’ve seen them previously take cues from Firestarter, Goonies, E.T., The Thing, Aliens, Monster Squad, Scanners, The Lost Boys, and many other 80s movies. Being influenced by a trashy horror flick like Chopping Mall wouldn’t be terribly hard to imagine and I can also see a little bit of Fast Times At Ridgemont High (also the local mall was a key location) in there as well with Steve’s sailor themed outfit mirroring Judge Reinhold’s pirate work uniform.
The third season sees some new faces with Cary Elwes (Saw, The Princess Bride) and Jake Busey (Starship Trooper, The Frighteners) taking new roles.
Stranger Things is set for release on July 4th.
