Production on the upcoming Marvel Studios series WandaVision is underway in Atlanta, and thanks to some new set photos, we may have just learned about something big coming to the MCU in Phase 4.
Newly discovered set photos posted by JustJared reveal Elizabeth Olsen and Teyonah Parris, who will portray a older version of Monica Rambeau, in front of a building marked with S.W.O.R.D. logos.
For those of you unfamiliar with the fictional organization, it was first introduced during Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men run back in 2004, before spinning off into its own series. It acts as the extraterrestrial counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D. and protects Earth from cosmic threats. In the comics, the director of S.W.O.R.D. is Special Agent Abigail Brand, who has yet to be referenced in the MCU.
There were rumors at one point that the creative team behind Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted to introduce the cosmic offshoot in their series, but that never panned out, likely due to the rights for S.W.O.R.D. being tied up at 20th Century Fox.
Having an adult Monica Rambeau working as an Agent of S.W.O.R.D. is pretty cool and definitely aligns with her aspirations that we saw in Captain Marvel. Fans even speculated that the post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home gave us our first look or indication that S.W.O.R.D. was a thing, as Nick Fury was on a ship or space station of sorts operated by Skrulls.
WandaVision will tie into the events of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness and is expected to air sometime early 2021.
