Variety has revealed that Sony Pictures has given two release dates for untitled Marvel Comics films in 2020. Those two films will be released on July 10th, 2020 and October 2nd, 2020.
Their assumption is that the July spot could be for Jared Leto’s Morbius which is on track to begin filming this February in Atlanta and London, England. The character is a doctor turned vampire during an experiment to cure himself of a rare blood disease. Dr. Michael Morbius went from Spider-Man villain to heroic figure in the Marvel Comics.
And the second might be for an untitled Venom sequel which isn’t terribly shocking given its recent box office success. Venom has already learned an impressive $780 million as it inches closer to crossing $800 million, making it one of the highest grossing films at Sony.
We repeatedly mentioned before that Venom’s success meant a sequel was a foregone conclusion. Sony fast-tracked a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle after the film almost made a billion dollars at the global box office. The studio put it together so quickly that it will begin shooting in late January. There are plenty of signs they’ll do the same for a Venom sequel, given they were setting up Woody Harrelson’s Carnage at the end of it.
I think the best way to go with an adaptation of existing comic book material would be combining Separation Anxiety and Maximum Carnage, the latter is a huge Spider-Man Universe crossover where Morbius, Venom, Spider-Man, Nightwatch, and Black Cat all come together to fight Carnage’s gang of supervillains. The two comic book runs had been turned into video games in the 1990s.
Although, Sony Pictures seemingly has a script for Kraven The Hunter as well on the table that could happen sooner than expected. Since there haven’t been any reports of work being started on Venom 2.
