Our pals over at ThePlaylist were able to speak with Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller on their podcast about his original plans for Deadpool 2 before exiting and the studio replacing him with David Leitch.
First, he revealed Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa would have become the shapeshifting mutant Copycat (something had been teased in the first film) along with having a larger story arc.
Also, he wanted to cast a rather tall actor to play Cable.
Going through what seemed like the dream checklist for any comic book fan, Miller stated that Deadpool’s relationship with Reggie was in there from the beginning and always the heart of the film, he wanted “a [comic accurate] Cable who was 6 feet, 7 inches” tall, and that he’d “cracked the secret to the Vanessa storyline.” Apparently Vanessa had a far richer character arc than what was presented in the final cut of the film seeing her transformation into the iconic character Copycat and a deeper exploration of the love story between herself and Wade.
Deadpool 2 got a huge knock for the fridging of Vanessa after being killed off in the first couple of minutes, even if they brought her back from the dead at the end of the movie she was sidelined for most of the film.
Allowing her to get her own superpowers would have been interesting and likely would have been less annoying than that afterlife subplot.
Another big thing was that the studio had allowed him to have The Thing from The Fantastic Four fight The Juggernaut, there had been plenty of concept art to back up those plans. Instead, David Leitch and Ryan Reynolds used that as a reason to bring back Colossus.
But perhaps the biggest shocker came in the form of an iconic “Fantastic Four” character who was greenlit to make an appearance. Miller explained that he got permission to have “The Thing throwing down with Juggernaut” in the film’s climactic action set-piece.
It’ll be interesting to see if Tim Miller will end up tackling anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he as said in the past that he counts Marvel’s Kevin Feige as a fan and even included a shoutout to him in the original film with Feige’s Famous Pizza.
Before the merger, Tim Miller had been trying to develop a Kitty Pryde solo movie.
Ryan Reynolds has been teasing Deadpool’s arrival to the MCU (a possible arrival in Phase 5) after meeting with Marvel Studios brass and screenwriter Paul Wernick revealing Marvel promised to allow Wade to keep playing in an R-rated universe.
Deadpool 3 is most likely on the table but has yet to be officially announced by Marvel.
Terminator: Dark Fate releases this Friday on November 1st.
