During an interview with AReeltimeConversation, Australian sound mixer Guntis Sics seemingly revealed that Marvel’s Shang-Chi could indeed shoot in Sydney, Australia, and that production might begin sometime next year.
SICS: “There are some cool things coming to Australia. There is another Marvel movie Shang-Chi, I think it’s called. It’s a new Marvel movie coming to Sydney next year. It’s based on a kung fu master, I think.”
This potential update on the film would reinforce previous local Australia outlets that claimed that Shang-Chi would the upcoming Marvel feature film project to film at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
This isn’t an official confirmation, but there is a really good chance this is accurate given that Guntis is a seasoned professional and would have access to information about inbound projects coming to Australia.
Sics’ credits include Thor: Ragnarok, Aquaman, Pacific Rim: Uprising, The Wolverine, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Kong: Skull Island, and the upcoming Netflix film Dhaka starring Chris Hemsworth.
Shang-Chi is currently in pre-production stages with director Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy, 12 Short Term) attached and a script penned by Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984).
Shooting in Australia makes sense for a lot of reasons.
Marvel Studios has shot there before with Thor: Ragnarok. The country is extremely close to potential Asian filming locations such as South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, and others. There is also a rather large Asian population in Australia (could be easier for casting extras) and we’ve seen the country double for Asian countries in the past.
You can watch the interview below where he claims that Shang-Chi will indeed be the mystery Marvel movie coming to Australia. A big thanks to AReeltimeCoversation!
We currently don’t know when the film could be released as we don’t know when it will begin shooting and Marvel Studios hasn’t even officially announced the project is even happening.
