During the Los Angeles press conference for The Mandalorian, it was revealed that season one actor Carl Weathers (Rocky, Predator, Happy Gilmore) will be directing an episode for season two.
FAVREAU: “By Carl being there and being part of it, and seeing how we were putting this together, experimenting with it and seeing it all come together, he was perfectly qualified. He understood the story, he understood the characters, the cast, and the technology. So it’s really fun to be working for Carl now.”
Our pals at StarWarsUnity posted a video of the press conference.
HN Entertainment first broke the news earlier in the year that Lucasfilm/Disney had greenlit a second season of The Mandalorian before it was even showed-off at Star Wars Celebration Chicago.
Carl isn’t the only actor directing episodes on The Mandalorian as Taika Waititi also plays IG-11 and there have rumblings that director Bryce Dallas Howard may appear in the series as well.
He also has lots of experience directing television with the Hawaii Five-O reboot, Silk Stalkings, and Sheena.
Jon Favreau will be back to write/produce along with directing an episode himself.
Director Deborah Chow who worked on the first season is moving on to tackle the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series starring Ewan McGregor that begins shooting next year.
Tony Gilroy who headed-up the extensive reshoots on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is reportedly going to be directing a couple of episodes of the Cassian Andor series as well. That will see the return of cast members Diego Luna and Alan Tudyk.
The Mandalorian begins airing on Disney+ starting on November 12th.
After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. “The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
