The latest trailer for Josh Boone’s pre-merger X-Men spinoff film The New Mutants dropped early this morning and there seems to be a consistent line that has carried over from the original trailer.

That line from Alice Braga’s Cecilia Reyes asks Blu Hunt’s Dani Moonstar (aka Mirage) if she knows what mutants are.

REYES: “Do you know what mutants are?”

This would potentially confirm our suspicions that the film indeed takes place outside of the Singerverse (possibly as originally planned) as kids would most certainly know what mutants are if the events of the X-Men films had taken place (given mutants started appearing in public in the 1960-1970s).

To me, it sounds like New Mutants could, in fact, be a true standalone, unlike Deadpool which seemingly had it’s own side X-Men universe with an entirely new Colossus as Daniel Cudmore’s version was rebooted with a Russian/GCI version. The 1990s Dark Phoenix cast cameo didn’t make one lick of sense in Deadpool 2’s present-day era and I feel like we’ll have to chalk that up to being in Wade’s imagination.

Anyways, there is a really good shot that New Mutants is simply a standalone story featuring lesser-known mutants and won’t likely be continued any further than his one-off installment.

However, given that mutants seemingly are a relatively new thing and a year doesn’t seem to be really established in the footage we’ve seen. I think some fans are sort of hoping that the absence of connections to the Singerverse (X-Men to Dark Phoenix) might allow the cast to carry over to the MCU, not unlike Ryan Reynolds Wade Wilson/Deadpool (possibly other Deadpool characters could make the jump).

The only thing is that Marvel Studios has made it official that Deadpool was the only X-Men/Fox character making the jump to the MCU post-merger (seemingly everyone else would get a hard reboot), with Deadpool 3 in the works the number of characters from Deadpool/Deadpool 2 joining the MCU could increase but there is zero word if they ultimately will.

WandaVision and Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness could also be upcoming entry points for mutants to start arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the main X-Men films start rolling out. As Kevin Feige has suggested recently that Wanda will indeed explore what truly makes her the Scarlet Witch and that could also mean finally calling her a mutant, like in the comics.

New Mutants is officially set for release theatrically on April 3rd.

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
