As the release of the upcoming Hellboy reboot looms we keep learning about other comic book characters that will be appearing in the R-rated feature adaptation and another recently rumored character we’ve now been able to confirm.
Our pal Mr.H Reviews had previously revealed a bunch of potential spoilers for the film including the addition of Russian folklore character the Baba Yaga, and we can now confirm with our own separate sources that Baba Yaga is in fact in the movie and is done with practical makeup.
The Baba Yaga is one of the most powerful magic users, let alone witches, in the Hellboy universe. She is well known across the Russian lands and is feared by many who dwell there, especially those who live in the wilderness she often roams. Before the loss of her eye and depowering, she was often seen in the graves of the dead, counting the fingers of the corpses before sucking in their souls and breathing them into empty skulls to create ghostly lanterns. These lanterns are shown to hang from the branches of the world tree and completely fill the interior of her chicken-legged house.
We won’t go into too much detail ourselves as not to spoil the movie but we do hope that her inclusion could mean that in future installments we might end up seeing a badass character like Koshchei the Deathless, who is a bound servant to Baba Yaga. As producer and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has been vocal about crafting a Hellboy Cinematic Universe starting with this reboot.
Check out Mr. H’s original video below, but be warned it’s littered with spoilers for most of the film.
Hellboy is set to be released on April 12th by Lionsgate Films.
Based on the graphic novels by Mike Mignola, Hellboy, caught between the worlds of the supernatural and human, battles an ancient sorceress bent on revenge.
