Today, Lucasfilm and Disney have officially announced that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would be directing and co-writing a brand new Star Wars for the studio. The Oscar-winning screenwriter will co-write the film’s script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho).
Taika has an established relationship with Lucasfilm after directing an episode of The Mandalorian and playing bounty hunter droid IG-11.

Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi, who recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the widely-acclaimed first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release. Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award® nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho), who received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar-winning film, 1917.
Waititi recently won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on Jojo Rabbit. He shot his sports drama Next Goal Wins and is currently in pre-production on his Thor sequel Thor: Love & Thunder.
When this new Star Wars film will begin shooting is currently unknown with production schedules up-in-the-air.
