Recently, Taika Waititi took to his Instagram account to do a watch party of Thor: Ragnarok and including a fan Q&A session. Revealing some first-look concept artwork for Thor: Love & Thunder and confirmed that Miek will indeed be female.
Despite months of fan speculation, it doesn’t sound like fan-favorite Thor character Beta Ray Bill is as much as a lock for the sequel as thought. Taika isn’t sure if Beta Ray Bill was going to end up in Thor: Love & Thunder but admits he loves him and would want to include him.
WAITITI: “I mean, I love Beta Ray Bill and it would be awesome to have him in the film but I just don’t know right now. Things are, you know, up in the air.”
Beta Ray Bill is a fan-favorite character from the Thor comic books and plenty of fans speculated that Christian Bale could be playing him in the fourth film. The director isn’t known for lying to fans so they genuinely might not be exactly planning on including Bill.
Beta Ray Bill is from an alien species called Korbinite that in the comic books proves himself worthy of the powers of Thor and Odin grants him own Asgardian weapon, Stormbreaker, made by Eitiri (Eitri builds this weapon for Thor in Avengers: Infinity War). This also explains why the heroic character wears a similar costume to the God of Thunder.
There have been teases beyond Stormbreaker, as Thor: Ragnarok had a building featured a statue head that looks a lot like Bill (comic book accurate) and there was a piece of concept art from Thor: The Dark World that showed-off what the Korbinites might look like in the MCU had they been introduced in that film.
Natalie Portman would be returning to the role of Jane Foster taking on the Lady Thor persona. Actor Christian Bale was confirmed as playing a villain thanks to Valkyrie actress Tessa Thompson, but his character has yet to be announced.
Production was expected to begin in August in Australia at the same stage facility as Shang-Chi, but due to that film’s delays due to the film industry globally shutting down over COVID-19 concerns, it remains to be seen if filming on the Thor movie would even begin in 2020. Things are a little unclear when productions will resume.
It was recently reported that writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson would be contributing to the script that previous had work done by the director. Taika won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar this year for his work on Jojo Rabbit.
Disney recently gave Thor: Love & Thunder a new release date of February 18th, 2022 giving the project some wiggle-room if delays pushed filming into 2021.
