The Star Wars franchise will be entering a new phase as the Skywalker Saga will be ending with the release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December.
We now have an idea of what the 9th main saga film could do at the domestic box office via some early tracking.
According to BoxOfficePro, the final installment will be looking towards a domestic opening weekend in the range of $185-225 million. The high-end projection would skew slightly higher than Star Wars: The Last Jedi and there is a shot it could go higher over the next month or so.
They also believe that the domestic total could be as high as $750 million.
For comparison, here are the recent opening weekends for the Star Wars films since The Force Awakens.
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – $247.9 million
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – $155 million
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) – $220 million
- Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) – $84.4 million
Avengers: Endgame will likely continue to keep the opening weekend record with a massive $357.1 million.
However, these projects suggest that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is most likely going to make over a billion dollars at the global box office.
The cast includes Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Dominic Monaghan, Greg Grunberg, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams.
What the future holds for the feature film side of Star Wars is little unclear with Rian Johnson, Benioff/Weiss, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige developing a wave of new movies that are expected to move away from the Skywalker Saga.
Beyond the films, Lucasfilm is developing/release a wave of live-action shows on Disney’s new streaming service Disney+ starting with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian set to begin airing on November 12th.
They’re also working on the second season of The Mandalorian along with untitled shows focused on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20th as tickets are on sale now.
