Star Wars Episode 9 Will Have a Time Jump, John Boyega Hints

With Star Wars: The Last Jedi now almost half a year behind us, it’s safe to say that if you’re still a fan of the franchise after the controversial film, you’re looking towards the future. Star Wars: Episode 9 is set to debut December 2019 and will bring an end to the Skywalker saga – as far as we know. However, that film may not pick up right where Episode 8 left off, and instead, it looks like we’ll find Rey, Finn, and Poe some time farther in the future.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance, Boyega primarily spoke about an app he’s deeply involved with that aims to help ease the lives of cancer patients. However, when asked about the galaxy far, far away and returning for the ninth installment he shared some interesting details.

“I can’t wait to start shooting the next and final leg of the franchise,” Boyega said. “The first step is growing out my hair, so you can wait for the trailer to see why.”

That’s a pretty significant clue that there’s going to be at least a few months time difference between Episode 8 and Episode 9. In both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, which take place presumably immediately after one another, Finn is rocking a pretty close-cropped style. Whether that was his preference or not, it’s likely due to his former profession as a First Order Stormtrooper and having to wear that helmet.

If he’s growing his hair out, that’s a good sign that we’ll find the heroes some time after the events of Episode 8, in their newly renewed struggle against the First Order. Stylistic changes to characters in movies are typically more symbolic of character changes over time than simply time moving forward, so it’ll be interesting to see how Finn has changed when we find him in Episode 9.
