WARNING, THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE INCLUDES SPOILERS FROM SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME
Throughout his several Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances, Spider-Man has worn five suits on screen. The first suit, known as the Homemade Suit, was designed very practically to protect his secret identity and help manage the stimuli around him. The second suit, known as the Stark Suit, was closer to the classic Spider-Man attire and appeared in Captain America: Civil War.
This suit had a ridiculous amount of features such as 576 possible web-shooter combinations, parachute, drone, web wings, an A.I. called Karen, and programmable modes such as enhanced interrogation mode and enhanced reconnaissance mode. Already appearing to be more than enough for a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, he wore three more costumes which all appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The most advanced suit is the Iron Spider Armor. Designed by Tony Stark to be Peter’s official Avengers uniform, it has vastly upgraded abilities compared to the previous Stark Suit. New additions include neural-reactive nanotechnology, spider-legs, environmental protection, instant-kill mode, and enhanced durability. The drawback of this armor is that it needs a special nanite containment module for when Peter isn’t wearing it.
This suit likely has a unique place in Peter’s heart as it was the suit Peter was wearing during the Decimation, Final Battle Against Thanos, and sacrifice of Tony Stark. The next suit Peter wears is a basic dark-colored Stealth Suit which adds no extra features. While wearing this suit Peter got the nickname of “Night Monkey.” For the final act of the film, Spider-Man received a new and improved suit in a red and black color pattern.
The Upgraded Suit was the first suit since the Homemade Suit designed by Peter. Instead of being designed for all-purpose scenarios, it was built to include certain equipment determined necessary to defeat Mysterio. To create the suit in a small amount of time, Peter used a suit creator within a Stark Industries private jet. Notable capabilities include custom web-shooter variations, enhanced web-wings, enhanced durability, and a parachute. The creation of this suit took place within a group of controversial moments which many viewers feel Peter is shown as an “Iron Man Jr.” Regardless of opinion, the new red and black Upgraded Suit looks stunning. It will be interesting to see how long he keeps the suit because it didn’t build on previous suits but instead stripped things back.
Based on Peter’s interactions with the Stark suit builder, he seemed to intentionally ignore adding an AI component (Karen), spider-drone, spider legs, and nano-tech. Making the suit feel fresh and upgraded along with it being more “grounded” than the Iron Spider Armor was a smart move by the writing team. This allows Spider-Man to not feel invincible as this new suit has a few weaknesses. Shown in the movie, parts of the suit such as the web shooters can be damaged. The suit also doesn’t appear to have features such as GPS or a phone/messaging system (likely due to the absence of an A.I.).
Likely the suit has extra features not yet revealed. If true, certain abilities I think would be interesting to see yet would keep the suit “grounded” would be on-the-spot web-shooter combinations, automatic web shooter reloading, a belt spider-signal, and Bluetooth phone connector (so he can answer calls while in the suit hands-free).
