The long-awaited sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming and epilogue to Marvel’s Phase 3, might divide hardcore Spidey fans. At least that’s how I felt walking out of it. As with most Marvel movies, it’s fun but generally flawed. This film had a lot riding on it considering it was next after Avengers: Endgame and also introducing the fan favorite villain Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.
I’m sad to report that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the movie. In my initial social media reaction, I called it “good, not great” and that about summarizes my thoughts on the film. I was really hoping Watts and co would lean more heavily into exploring the world post Endgame, especially given how emotionally resonant that film was. Instead, it’s almost treated as an afterthought. Gyllenhaal shines as Mysterio, but he doesn’t really get to flex his acting muscles into halfway through the film. If you liked Homecoming, and you like this version of the character, you’ll probably have a fun time with Far From Home. As always, you can check out my full thoughts in the video below.
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.
