Sony Pictures keeps knocking off box office landmarks with their Spider-Man spin-off Venom, despite predictions that without Peter Parker the film was dead-on-arrival. The comic book film is on the brink of crossing $800 million within the next week or so.
Venom has currently earned $780.5 million globally, including an excellent second weekend in China overtaking new release Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in that market. It does look like that the Spidey spin-off will end up making more than most of the films in the franchise as it’s about to surpass Spider-Man 2 just behind Spider-Man’s $821 million, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s $880 million, and Spider-Man 3’s $891 million.
A final total in the $800 million range is looking good.
Again, once Venom entered the profit range it was almost certain that Sony Pictures would be moving forward with a sequel. It hasn’t been made official but it’ll but a foregone conclusion that we’ll see them announce plans soon.
They’ll be shooting Jared Leto’s Morbius next, said to begin filming this February in Atlanta and the United Kingdom. The vampire superhero flick is most likely going to earn a 2020 release date.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is the next release coming out on July 5th, 2019.
