In one of the more bone-head studio executive moves we’ve seen concerning superhero franchises, Sony Pictures has revealed to IGN the official name of the Spider-Man film universe (MCU and not).
That official name is Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters.
IGN reached out to the studio for clarification on what their Marvel movie universe should be called and were told its official name is the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters.
The title comes off as either a weak placeholder or a complete brain-fart from Sony’s Tom Rothman. Considering the studio had released an Oscar-winning film using the title Spider-Verse, which would be less of a mouth-full for bloggers and audiences alike. It also has branding appeal because you automatically know these would be connected to the Spider-Man films.
Here are the current release dates for Sony’s upcoming live-action Marvel movies as of today, but is subject to change.
- Morbius – March 19th, 2021
- Venom: Let There Be Carnage – June 25th, 2021
- Spider-Man 3 – November 5th, 2021
A Sinister Six movie was once being put together by writer/director Drew Goddard (Cabin In The Woods) but once The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to impress audiences that projected was canned and Tom Holland was recast in a second rebooted version of the franchise. Franchise producer Amy Pascal is still open to the idea of revisiting the project in the future.
Former Silver & Black director Gina Prince-Bythewood has recently suggested to The Hollywood Reporter that Sony/Marvel are considering a limited series for Disney+ featuring the two female Spider-Man characters. The last official word from Sony is that they were attempting to give lead characters Black Cat and Silver Sable to get separate solo films.
A couple of other projects in development include Kraven The Hunter from screenwriter Richard Wenk (The Expendables 2, The Equalizer) and a Madame Webb film from Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius).
Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch had been reportedly characters they are interested in giving films too as well.
