Our pals over at ThatHashtagShow previously released a bevy of character breakdowns for New Line Cinema’s new Mortal Kombat movie and it’s been a year since that lineup was released. After a year things can change and scripts get revised, however, we’ve managed to confirm another character from their list.
HN Entertainment has been able to confirm from our own independent source that studio is indeed currently auditioning actresses for the role of Sonya Blade, one of the original characters from the 1992 game.
The casting is expected to be announced soon along with a handful of other leads/supporting leads.
Here is the character breakdown for the character previously shared by ThatHashtagShow.
SONYA BLADE: Supporting Lead Female. 30s. The beautiful, brainy blonde writer who chases the prophecy of Mortal Kombat. She recruits Cole and fights bravely and selflessly for a team she can only be a true part of once she earns a medallion in combat.
As far as we can tell, Sonya is mostly the glue that will connect these other heroes and will be expelling a lot of exposition in the film. It’ll be interesting if they’ll actually end up hiring an actress with a fighting/stunt background.
Sonya Blade was played by Billy Madison’s Bridgette Wilson in the 1995 film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson only to be recast with Sandra Hess for the horrid sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
The character was inspired by female martial arts actress Cynthia Rothrock, not unlike how Johnny Cage was famously inspired by Jean-Claude Van Damme.
HN previously revealed that Reptile, Sub-Zero, and Mileena (possibly along with others) would be working for the villain Shang Tsung. Also, that Jarek is being cast in the film and Kano’s crime syndicate Black Dragon will be featured.
Cole Turner, who THS pegged as the main protagonist is officially in the movie as well.
Filming will mostly take place in South Australia.
Mortal Kombat is set for release on March 5th, 2021.
