Sony Pictures seems extremely confident about their upcoming animated superhero film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The word we’ve been hearing concerning early screenings has been over-the-moon, some calling it one of their favorites of the year.
So, of course, Sony is going to capitalize on this buzz and expected success. TheHollywoodReporter is now not only hearing about early development on a sequel but also a female-centric spin-off movie as well.
Joaquim Dos Santos, known for his work on cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender and more recently, Netflix’s Voltron series, has been tapped to direct the sequel.
At the same time Lauren Montgomery, who also worked on Voltron and co-directed animated movies Batman: Year One andSuperman/Batman: Apocalypse for DC, is in negotiations to helm an untitled Spider-centric project that will gather the female heroes in the Spider-Man universe of characters in one adventure. Bek Smith, who wrote episodes of CBS show Zoo, will pen the script.
Joaquim Dos Santos will direct the sequel and Lauren Montgomery is in talks to helm the female-centric spin-off. This is exciting news for sure as Sony really needs some hits from their animation side. Chris Miller and Phil Lord are expected to be creatively involved with these projects but don’t currently have deals.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is set to be released on December 14th.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that’s the first of its kind.
