It seems like when studios target younger audiences and add an animation element to their video game movies they seem to resonate better with the general public.
Paramount Pictures’ Sonic The Hedgehog is looking to outperform expectations this holiday weekend.
TheHollywoodReporter is claiming that projections for Sonic The Hedgehog’s opening weekend has jumped to over $60 million after it’s solid debut on Friday earned an estimated $21 million.
Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog grossed a huge $21 million on Friday for a projected four-day debut of $60 million-plus over Presidents Day weekend, including $50 million or more for the three days.
If Sonic does earn over $55 million or more for the three days it will have surpassed the opening weekend of fellow animated/live-action hybrid video game adaptation Detective Pikachu, which earned $54.3 million.
Sonic would then earn the title of largest opening for a video game film.
Birds of Prey is expected to earn around $20 million over the four-day weekend, which fine but not the best news for a holiday weekend given the film’s underperformance last weekend.
Sonic tries to navigate the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound best friend — a human named Tom Wachowski. They must soon join forces to prevent the evil Dr. Robotnik from capturing Sonic and using his powers for world domination.
