‘Solo’ Co-Writer Jonathan Kasdan Completes ‘Willow’ Sequel Series Pilot Script For Lucasfilm/Disney+

During an interview with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy for the LATimes, we’ve finally got an update of sorts on the status of their Willow sequel series that Ron Howard revealed was pitched by screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Indiana Jones 5) back in late April.

The series expected to land at Disney+ now has completed pilot script penned by Kasdan. A small update but an update none the less.

As Disney+ is now hungry to keep subscribers and grow their new streaming service adding new/original content to the platform is going to be key to their continued success.

While Willow hasn’t been officially greenlit if you look at the other shows they’ve moved forward with that aren’t Star Wars or Marvel, it’s safe to say that they’ll end up ponying-up the money for this one too.

Interesting enough, while the article laid out a bunch of future plans for Lucasfilm the one project missing was their 5th Indiana Jones film directed by Steven Spielberg and rumored to begin shooting in the spring/summer of next year with an official release day of July 8th, 2021.

It’s assumed that Warick Davis would be reprising the titular character of Willow, given his current status with Lucasfilm taking multiple roles within the new wave of live-action Star Wars projects over the last couple of years.

Other cast members such as Val Kilmer could return like he recently did with Top Gun: Maverick, but the angle for the new series has yet to be revealed and what Jonathan Kasdan wants to do with the property.

It’s certainly a lovely fantasy world that could compliant their Star Wars shows and possibly given a larger scope/scale than that original film.

I’m slightly curious given Bryce Dallas Howard’s connection to both Lucasfilm via directing The Mandalorian and her father directing original film if she does end up involved with the series. I wouldn’t be shocked if she directs on the series or even ended up playing the adult version of Elora Danan, the redheaded baby girl from the first movie.

Her episode of The Mandalorian certainly feels like it was similar in tone to Willow.

WILLOW – A baby girl is discovered in a river by Ranon and Mims, the children of Willow Ufgood, a dwarf farmer and magician and the baby girl is taken into the care of Willow’s family. But when a terrifying dog-like creature attacks Willow’s village, whilst tracking down the baby. Willow consults the village council and the wizard The High Aldwin. The High Aldwin gives Willow a task and Willow leaves the village and embarks on the task to give the baby girl to a responsible person. But Willow soon learns the baby is Elora Danan, the baby girl destined to bring about the downfall of the evil sorceress Queen Bavmorda. Joined by his allies: swordsman Madmartigan, sorceress Fin Raziel and the Brownies Franjean and Rool, Willow takes it upon himself to protect Elora from Queen Bavmorda, who intends to kill Elora and prevent Elora from fulfilling her destiny. And Willow and his allies are pursued by Queen Bavmorda’s daughter Sorsha and the evil commander of Queen Bavmorda’s army General Kael, whom are searching for Elora and bring her back to Queen Bavmorda’s castle, where Queen Bavmorda bids to kill Elora in a ritual and prevent the prophecy of her downfall.
