Variety reports that Disney has finally found their Ariel for Rob Marshall’s live-action adaptation of their animated film The Little Mermaid. They’ve reportedly cast singer Halle Bailey (Grown-ish) from the group Chloe x Halle, which would make sense given that the film would need a lead that can sing.
Chloe x Halle member Halle Bailey is ready to become part of Disney’s world.
The R&B singer has been tapped to play Ariel in Disney’s next live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.” Although director Rob Marshall has spent the last couple of months meeting with talent, insiders say Bailey has been a clear front runner from the beginning.
She would be joining Melissa McCarthy as Ursula the sea witch, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
Halle’s casting would reaffirm previous reports that Disney was seeking a black actress to play Ariel, as Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home) was rumored at one point for being in the mix.
Disney has yet to give The Little Mermaid an official release date.
In Disney’s beguiling animated romp, rebellious 16-year-old mermaid Ariel is fascinated with life on land. On one of her visits to the surface, which are forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton, she falls for a human prince. Determined to be with her new love, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. But when plans go awry for the star-crossed lovers, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.
