While Steven Spielberg has placed Indiana Jones 5 on hiatus while a new script is said to be in development he’ll be moving his attention to his West Side Story remake for Amblin and 20th Century Fox.
West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet”. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway – whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what’s happened, tragedy strikes and doesn’t stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.
A report from Showbiz411 now suggests that Mexican singer/actress Eiza Gonzalez is circling the project with the role of Anita said to be in mind for her. Rita Moreno played the part of Anita in the original movie which led to her eventual Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress.
Eiza would have some rather large shoes to fill but is a professional singer which should help her on the song performance side.
Gonzalez has been knocking out a rather large amount of action roles lately with Baby Driver, Bloodshot, Alita: Battle Angel, Kung Fury 2, and Godzilla vs Kong.
It would be Baby Driver reunion if she lands the lead, as her co-star Ansel Elgort was reportedly attached for a lead role as well.
Filming on West Side Story is said to begin next summer in New York City.
A release date has yet to be announced by 20th Century Fox.
