Deadline has word from Warner Bros. that they’ve now delayed the release date for December 22nd, 2021 which means it’ll be going head-to-head with James Cameron’s Avatar 3.
Sherlock Holmes 3 won’t be on the case for Christmas next year after all. Warner Bros said tonight that the threequel starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law has been pushed to December 22, 2021, with its former Christmas Day 2020 slot going to an untitled WB event film, per the studio.
This isn’t terribly shocking as they also mention that director Guy Ritchie is still attached. Ritchie has the press tour for Disney’s Aladdin this year when that movie releases and he’s currently in post on his gangster film Bush, formerly titled Toff Guys that he only recently shot in London.
Ritchie was just too busy to shoot the film and Jude Law would likely have commitments with Fantastic Beasts 3 making things a little complicated as well. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are expected to reprise their roles and a recent script was penned by Hannibal’s Chris Brancato (Narcos, Narcos: Mexico, The Godfather of Harlem). It’s unknown if Noomi Rapace will return as her character Madame Simza Heron from Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows or if Jared Harris will return as the Doctor Moriarty.
I previously revealed at OmegaUnderground that the studio was scouting locations in Morocco, which was a recent filming location for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
Jude Law can be seen in Captain Marvel this weekend while Robert Downey Jr. may be playing Tony Stark for the final time in Avengers: Endgame out on April 26th.
