Earlier in the year, HN Entertainment first reported that Sherlock Holmes 3 starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law would be set in an Old West version of San Francisco, California and was later confirmed when Warner Bros. secured California state tax incentives (worth $20 million) to film in the state.
Well, along with California, HN has learned that director Dexter Fletcher (replaced a busy Guy Ritchie) is also aiming to shoot a portion of the film in England.
Not terribly shocking but still it’s nice to know the entire film won’t be strictly shot in California. The last two Sherlock Holmes installments shot at various British stage locations such as Pinewood Studios UK, Shepperton Studios, and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.
At one time they had also planned to shoot scenes in Morocco, but that remains to be seen if it will carry over to this version of the sequel.
The main reason Guy Ritchie couldn’t direct the third Sherlock Holmes film is that he’s about to begin shooting his next crime thriller starring Jason Statham, an English remake of the 2004 French film Le Convoyeur titled Cash Truck (also shooting in both California and England).
Guy will also be busy on the promotional tour for his upcoming film The Gentlemen which begins releasing around the same time that Sherlock Holmes 3 is expected to begin filming, in January.
Dexter Fletcher, you might remember had a starring role alongside Jason Statham in Guy Ritchie’s breakout flick Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels before making the jump from actor to feature director with efforts such as Eddie The Eagle and Rocketman.
The shoot set for early next year would suggest that casting announcements for the sequel are just around the corner.
I’m slightly curious if we’ll be seeing Jared Harris (Morbius, Chernobyl) reprising the role of the villainous Professor Moriarty, the main nemesis of Sherlock Holmes.
Warner Bros. has given Sherlock Holmes 3 a release date of December 22nd, 2021.
