Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is at the Toronto International Film Festival to screen his latest film Just Mercy, which stars Jamie Foxx, Michael B. Jordan, and Brie Larson.

MTVNews caught up with the filmmaker to ask him about casting the role of Shang-Chi with Canadian actor Simu Liu and asked if we might see Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel in the film, given that most of his movies feature the actress

MTV: I have to ask you quickly about Shang-Chi. I can’t wait to see what you do with this, man. The cast you’ve assembled in this is amazing.

Is there room for Brie? I mean, Brie’s in all your films, basically. Does Captain Marvel have a role in Shang-Chi?

CRETTON: “I mean, I think there’s always room for Brie. But I don’t know we’ll see.”

MTV: What’s the template? Is there one for approaching a character and a property like that for you?

CRETTON: “For me, the approach to everything is the same. I search for the story through the characters, and I search for the themes through something that I will really emotionally connect with, and that’s what we’re trying to do with that.”

MTV: Can you just tell me what you saw in your leading man after a long search, why he was your guy?

CRETTON: “He’s awesome. There’s just an undefined thing that when somebody pops, everybody’s in agreement, and they’re just really excited.”

Shang-Chi will shoot at Fox Studios Australia in Syndey, New South Wales, Australia before Thor: Love and Thunder films at the same facility.

Joining Simu in the cast will be Awkwafina and Tony Leung as the real Mandarin, expected to be the main baddie of the film along with the return of The Ten Rings.

The action flick is set for release on February 12th, 2021.
