HBO Max has landed its first big kids’ programming whale via Variety.
They report that WarnerMedia has made a deal with Sesame Workshop to air the next five seasons of the educational show on HBO Max along with the show’s library that includes 50 seasons of Sesame Street.
HBO Max and “Sesame Street” producer Sesame Workshop have announced a new partnership which will bring the show’s 50-year library, as well as five new seasons of the show, to the streamer.
Don’t worry though, it will still keep airing on PBS Kids.
Beginning with season 51, the historic children’s series will premiere on HBO Max, before moving over to air on its traditional home of PBS Kids. All of the new “Sesame Street”-related content will also be made available to PBS Kids after premiering on the WarnerMedia-owned streamer. HBO will continue to air “Sesame Street” through season 50.
They’re also making an Elmo talk show titled The Not Too Late Show with Elmo and some other Sesame Street spinoffs.
New “Sesame Street” content coming to HBO Max includes five new 35-episode seasons of “Sesame Street,” annual “Sesame Street” specials, kicking off with an animated version of “The Monster at the End of this Book,” a family-centric live-action take on a late-night talk show titled “The Not Too Late Show with Elmo,” a new season of “Esme & Roy,” two new animated series, one of which will be a “Sesame Street” spinoff called “Meach Builders,” and finally a docuseries tackling difficult issues from a child’s perspective.
Most of the programming announcements for HBO Max outside of an animated Gremlins prequel has been geared towards a teen/mature audience.
Other programs being developed for HBO Max includes a Dune series directly connected to the Denis Villeneuve movie titled Dune: The Sisterhood, a modern Greek mythology series Circe, a crime series Tokyo Vice starring Ansel Elgort, and a dystopian near-future series DMZ based on the comic book from Vertigo.
Warner Bros. is also making a Sesame Street feature film starring Anne Hathaway and comedian/director Bo Burnham that will be released on June 4th, 2021.
