Yesterday, it was announced that Marvel Studios is finally getting into the business of making action horror films as they revealed that not only are making a new Blade movie but that Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book, Alita: Battle Angel) will be playing him.
Kevin Feige spoke with Fandango how their recent meeting quickly pivoted to Blade and how Doctor Strange opened the door for horror characters like Blade to occupy the MCU.
FEIGE: “We have, for years, wanted to find a new way into Blade, we love that character. We love that world. Now with Doctor Strange and the supernatural elements coming into the MCU, it felt like we could definitely start exploring that.”
It sounds like playing Blade was completely Mahershala Ali’s idea according to Kevin.
FEIGE: “Mahershala wanted to come in and meet with us. And when Mahershala Ali wants to meet, you take the meeting.”
“And I think he had just come off of his second Academy Award. And we were talking very polite, and he was talking about what a fan he is, and then he just cut right to it and was like ‘Blade’. And we were like ‘yes’.”

We don’t have many details on the new project as they didn’t name a director or screenwriter, but I’m sure we’ll get more information over the next couple of months.
What’s interesting is that Doctor Strange and Blade are connected via Midnight Sons, there is also an excellent opportunity for Marvel Studios to tackle those characters. Mainly, Hannibal King, who had been played by Ryan Reynolds in the god-awful Blade Trinity.
I’d also hope that Jack Russell aka Werewolf By Night might end up joining those ranks.
They really haven’t said if they’re rebooting or going the soft-reboot route as they did with Spider-Man and Hulk, deciding to skip over origin stories. Like will we get a new Whistler, Deacon Frost, Blood Pack and just pretend that the original New Line Cinema films never happened?
