With Cate Shortland’s Black Widow kicking-off Phase 4 there is a lot of pressure on the film to deliver. Scarlett Johansson has stated that producers told her that the action flick will have more fighting scenes than any other MCU project.
Some of the cast spoke to the press at San Diego Comic-Con and dropped some interesting plot details in the process.
IGN was able to briefly speak with David Harbour about his character Alexei Shostakov aka The Red Guardian, who is Russia’s version of Captain America. Alexei has a complex history/relationship with Natasha and he also reveals that the film’s setting will indeed take place directly after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
HARBOUR: “They’ve known each for a while and there is a complex history there.”
“It does get informed by the other movies, this movie happens right after Captain America: Civil War and those events factor in.”
In the comics, Alexei and Natasha had been married.
The film’s setting would certainly debunk previous prequel rumors, which I assume was old information based on the David Hayter incarnation of the solo film from like a decade ago. Something that Hayter himself had stated was the case when asked about the upcoming project.
Other characters that will be in the film include Yelena Belova aka Black Widow, Anthony Masters aka Taskmaster, Melina Vostokoff aka Iron Maiden/Black Widow, and Rick Mason aka The Agent.
Filming is still taking place at Pinewood Studios UK after some exterior shooting in Norway and Hungary.
Black Widow is officially set for release on May 1, 2020.
