Wow, if this latest rumor is true Sony Pictures might be reverting to their old self-destructive ways.
TheWrap claims that Amazing Spider-Man 2 screenwriter Roberto Orci (Transformers II: Revenge of The Fallen, Star Trek) is attached to write an untitled Spider-Man spinoff movie but fail to mention any concrete details about the project or what characters might be tackled in it.
We’re currently treating this as a rumor because Deadline, Variety, and TheHollywoodReporter aren’t backing up this report with their versions of it at this time.
To Spidey fans, this potential news is extremely perplexing given Orci’s bumpy history with franchises including helping to bring down Andrew Garfield run of Spider-Man with Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Orci had once been assigned to direct what would later be Paramount’s Star Trek Beyond (as a first-time feature film director) only for Justin Lin to replace him and his last big credited feature film was Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The film’s disappointing outcome led to Sony Pictures to finally breakdown to make a deal with Marvel Studios leading Tom Holland to replace actor Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man for the foreseeable future.
Before his removal from the franchise, Orci had been working on Amazing Spider-Man 3 with fellow screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Jeff Pinkner.
It’s certainly odd that Roberto has taken such a long break from feature film writing only to be asked back to tackle the Spider-Man universe of all things.
It certainly doesn’t give us confidence in Sony if this is true.
There are plenty of spinoff projects in various development stages at Sony at the moment with Black Cat, Silver Sable, Nightwatch, Jackpot, Silk, Madame Web, a possible revival of The Sinister Six and most recently a Spider-Woman project was rumored.
Kraven The Hunter also has a script from screenwriter Richard Wenk.
Lots of spinning plates but it remains to be seen if all of them will actually be released.
Jared Leto’s Morbius is set to be released on July 31st, Tom Hardy’s Venom 2 is out on October 2nd, and the untitled Spider-Man 3 starring Tom Holland will hit theatres on July 16th, 2021 as it’ll shoot over the summer with director Jon Watts returning.
