The other day, Collider’s Jeff Sneider mentioned on his podcast that the next Mad Max movie could be a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road and possibly focus on a younger Furiosa and mentioned rising star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Matrix 4, Watchmen, Aquaman) might be in the mix for a lead role.
It sounds like that information has spread online.
Today, Daniel Richtman posted an interesting casting grid on his Patreon page which includes the names of potential actors the studio might be interested in including Richard Madden (Eternals, Game of Thrones) for the role of Dementus and Jodie Comer (The Last Duel, Killing Eve) for a younger version of Furiosa.
The grid also mentions Yahya to back-up Jeff, but not his role.
This could mean that Charlize Theron is indeed getting recast with a younger actress.
The information also suggests a 2021 production start which would conflict with previous rumblings of a fall start, as we pointed out with Miller’s current film Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba (expected to begin shooting soon in Australia) that makes it somewhat impossible for Miller to shoot two big movies in the same year.
Miller had recently mentioned to Deadline that he was prepping his sequels and we know that one of them would be a film focused on Furiosa, it’ll be interesting to see if they end making a Mad Max movie without bringing back Tom Hardy.
Warner Bros. has yet to even confirm they’re moving forward with the project and there hasn’t been a release date set.
