Yesterday, we revealed a new trailer for the RoboCop documentary RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop and there is now a possible update on Orion’s upcoming sequel.
Our pals at SuperBroMovies have a rumor that original actor Peter Weller isn’t interested in reprising the role of Officer Alex Murphy aka RoboCop in Neill Blomkamp’s RoboCop Returns.
This isn’t a big shock, despite kind words from Blomkamp previously suggesting that he’d like to see Weller return. The man is in his seventies and the suit was grueling thirty years ago for him, I’d imagine he wouldn’t want to even attempt it now given his age. There is always the possibility that Peter could end up just voicing RoboCop, which might be a little more convenient for him but that remains to be seen.
We don’t know much about Returns other than it’s supposed to be a direct sequel to the original film nixing the two sequels and Sony’s reboot. SuperBroMovies also mentions that the script might be set a year or so after the original film, this could suggest the recasting the role of Nancy Allen’s Officer Anne Lewis with a new actress.
Blomkamp isn’t exactly about to go into production tomorrow as his next film Greenland starring Chris Evans is expected to begin filming this January in Toronto. However, I recently revealed that prep and development on the project has already started.
RoboCop co-creators Michael Miner and Ed Ed Neumeier are returning to pen the script alongside Terminator’s Justin Rhodes.
Orion Pictures/MGM haven’t given RoboCop Returns an official release date and it’s unknown when it could begin filming.
In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company’s nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.
