If you’re going to make Star Wars for adults, I guess you’re going to need some people that have worked on Star Wars. It’s been revealed that cinematographer Greig Fraser has joined Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake for Legendary Pictures according to Variety’s Kristopher Tapley, who tweeted the news yesterday.
Fraser’s most notable film credits include Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher, Rogue One: A Star War Story and is said to have recently worked on Lucasfilms’ The Mandalorian series as well. His next film to be released is Adam McKay’s Vice.
Set on the planet Arrakis, we find ourselves exploring the story of two warring galactic royal families House Atreides and House Harkonnen. When Duke Leto Atreides is been assassinated, his son Paul and wife Lady Jessica flee only to be adopted by the Fremen, becomes Paul’s personal army against the Harkonnen as he develops powers from the spice, a substance that extends life and powers interstellar travel. A tangled web of royal intrigue is revealed with the Emperor and other cosmic powers pulling the strings while attempting to erase house Atreides.
I’ve previously revealed the other impressive additions to the film’s production team including Sicario/Arrival production designer Patrice Vermette, Blade Runner 2049 costume designer Renee April, and recently with the addition of Dunkirk/The Dark Knight stunt coordinator Thomas Struthers.
Basically, it looks like Villeneuve is getting as ambitious with the Dune remake as we had previously suggested with this fantastic production team working behind the scenes and now with Fraser, behind the camera as well.
Timothee Chalamet is reportedly set for the lead role of Paul Atreides, while Rebecca Ferguson is in talks to play his young mother Lady Jessica Atreides. They’re also currently seeking a non-white actress for the role of Paul’s Fremen love interest Chani.
Tapley has also revealed that Bond 25 will see La La Land cinematographer Lunis Sandgren join the production which should be equally as exciting.
Production on Dune is expected to take place in Budapest, Hungary starting in March.
Dune is currently without a release date from Legendary, while Bond 25 is set for release on February 14th, 2020.
