According to Variety, Rocketman’s Dexter Fletcher will helm the third installment of the Sherlock Holmes movie franchise.
Fletcher will replace original director Guy Ritchie, who helmed the first two successful films nearly a decade ago. The filmmaker is hot off the critical and commercial success of Rocketman, which is already on its way to the Oscars next year. His work on Bohemian Rhapsody after replacing Bryan Singer has evidently not gone unnoticed by studios.
Sherlock Holmes himself Robert Downey Jr. is set to return, as well as Jude Law’s Professor Watson. The report adds that Warner Bros. planned a sequel ever since A Game of Shadows released in 2011, but couldn’t get the band back together due to scheduling.
In addition to Fletcher, Chris Brancato (Narcos, Hannibal) is on script duties while Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram are producing.
Sherlock Holmes 3 is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2021.
