While speaking with Uproxx at the Toronto International Film Festival, Knives Out writer/director Rian Johnson revealed that he’s actually very much interested in the idea of making multiple sequels featuring Daniel Craig’s character Detective Benoit Blanc.
JOHNSON: “I’ll tell you, the truth is I had such a great time working with Daniel Craig and I had so much fun doing this on every level, from writing it to making it. I’ve never really been interested in doing sequels, but this, the idea of doing more of these with Daniel as his character, is not sequels. It’s just what Agatha Christie did. It’s just coming up with a whole new mystery, a whole new location, all-new cast, whole new mechanics of the appeal of a mystery and everything. It’d be a blast.”
Sequel talk this early does sound like Rian had a lovely time making the movie as he does point out not being particularly interested in making them. But
Considering that Daniel Craig is about to retire the James Bond role after the release of No Time To Die next year, it would certainly give him a new franchise to get some steady and interesting acting work from.
Knives Out is already getting some buzz at TIFF and certainly should make for an interesting opening weekend at the box office, given all the talent involved it should make a bit of coin.
Then again, sequels will always be reliant on how much the original makes at the box office and we still don’t even have early tracking for Knives Out.
Rian also has a trilogy of Star Wars movies in development, which he has suggested he would direct the first installment then potentially stepping back to allow other directors to finish the next two movies. When he’ll find the time to write and shoot these Knives Out sequels remains to be been.
Lionsgate is likely hoping the movie is a big success and can make this a franchise alongside John Wick, aiming towards mature audiences.
Knives Out is set for release on November 27th.
