During CinemaCon, it was reaffirmed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson that he was still indeed developing his original Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm and even hinted that could be next once his crime thriller Knives Out releases on November 27th. Well, MTVNews caught up with Johnson at the event and got to ask him a little bit more about the status of his new Star Wars movies and also if he’s talked to J.J. Abrams about Star Wars: Episode IX.

MTV: How much in the loop are you with what J.J.’s cooked up for Episode IX? Have you seen cuts, or seen a script, or are you totally out of the loop?

JOHNSON: “No, I’ve had a couple of conversations with him but I’ve actually really enjoyed, kind of, sitting back waiting to get my popcorn on opening day and see how the thing turns out. I cannot wait”

MTV: Now if [J.J. Abrams] retcons the lineage of Rey’s parents, would that bother you at all, or whatever he wants to do is fine by you?

JOHNSON: “Like I said, man. I want to let go of all my expectations. I want to sit back, I want to be entertained,  I want to be surprised, I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that’s why I go to the movies, you know?”

They also tried to get a status update on his original Star Wars trilogy and how he feels about other upcoming Star Wars projects including the ones being developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

MTV: And are you still working on your own Star Wars project, where does that stand?

JOHNSON: “Still working on it, yeah. I’m excited about it.”

MTV: Any timeline? Have you submitted any story, script, anything?

JOHNSON: “No, we’re just working ahead on it and they’re figuring out, slate-wise, how it’s all gonna lay out. They’re working that up, and I’m just chugging away on it, and I can’t wait to get back into it.”

MTV: I’m just curious again, from a fan perspective, there’s talk of Benioff and Weiss doing something. There are rumors of Knights of the Old Republic, there’s the Obi-Wan spinoff. Just as a fan, what would you be most excited to see?

JOHNSON: “I’m psyched about all of it, but for me, I’m friends with Dan and David, and, for example, to see two people like them just be given the reins to go out and show us what Star Wars is to them, you what I mean? I don’t know, I’m also psyched about the things that they are going to explore beyond what we’ve seen already. To me, that’s kind of the most exciting stuff is, pushing the limits of seeing stuff that we haven’t seen before in Star Wars. So, it’s exciting.”

Depending on who you want to listen to rumblings suggest that Rian’s film is the next one to go into production and other places suggest it will be Benioff and Weiss’ project. I think we’ll actually start getting some more concrete information about the upcoming films later in the month during Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, fingers crossed.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to be released on December 20th.
