One of the big film events coming in 2020 will be the release of Denis Villeneuve’s feature film reboot of Dune, based on the epic science fiction fantasy series created by author Frank Herbert.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout’s Rebecca Ferguson will be playing one of the female leads, Lady Jessica Atreides the mother of Timothee Clahame’s Paul Atreides (the space messiah in the series) and a powerful Bene Gesserit (humans with telekinesis powers).

Rebecca recently spoke with ComingSoon about Dune while promoting Doctor Sleep stating that Denis honors the source material and reveals they’ll be updating her characters slightly to reflect modern times.

FERGUSON: “Completely and utterly honors the strength of Jessica–the Bene Gesserit that she is, even though she is a concubine and her rights are not as high as the King or what her son becomes.”

“Denis was very much aligned with creating empowerment and powerful moments for her where they were needed. I think Frank Herbert… when he wrote it he didn’t really live in an understandably equal environment. And the book is great! It has beautiful moments in it. It’s not really where we are or where we should be.”

The rest of the cast includes Oscar Isaac, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, and David Dastmalchian.

Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Jon Spaihts are also developing an HBO Max spinoff series titled Dune: The Sisterhood.

If successful, Dune should spawn a wave of sequels as there are decades worth of books to pull from.

Dune will be released on December 18th, 2020.
