While people have previously believed that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad would simply be a sequel to the David Ayer movie, but producer Peter Safran while speaking with JoBlo suggests that isn’t exactly the case. Safran reveals that the movie is a “total reboot” and the recasting of Will Smith’s Deadshot with Idris Elba might speak to that.
“First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”
While it’s expected that Deadshot (played by Elba) and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be the few returning characters, it’s been reported by Collider that the new wave will include Otis Flannegan aka Ratcatcher, Nanaue aka King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker (might be played by Dave Bautista).
Keeping some of the original actors would suggest it’s more of soft-reboot.
DiscussingFilm also recently revealed a rumor that female DC villain Killer Frost might be another new character joining the roster along with some potential plot details. Adding Frost might suggest they’ll be replacing Enchantress as they seemingly are with a lot of the other characters from the first film.
I was also told a rumor that Killer Frost will be apart of the Suicide Squad in the film. As for the story, I have been told a rumor that the current draft of James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ may follow the team on a mission to the Middle East to stop Onslaught and infiltrate their headquarters in Qurac. This seems like a fitting type of story for the ‘Suicide Squad’ that will keep the stakes lower compared to the first film.
Production is rumored to begin this fall in Atlanta, Georgia.
Warner Bros. has officially set the release date for The Suicide Squad on August 6th, 2021.
