The Hollywood Reporter is revealing that Paramount Pictures has hired screenwriters, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to pen a new G.I. Joe film. This new G.I. Joe feature film isn’t being referred to as a “follow-up” rather than a sequel which would suggest that it might be another solo film focusing on another G.I. Joe member’s origin story.
Joe and Anna recently adapted the comic book Ex Machina titled The Great Machine for Legendary and starring Oscar Isaac.
Snakes Eyes will see Henry Golding (The Gentlemen, Crazy Rich Asians) play the silent/masked character in the origin film allowing Paramount Pictures to use the project as a reboot for the entire franchise with new characters playing key characters.
HN Entertainment exclusively revealed last year that Snake Eyes film would include a new version of Cobra villain The Baroness. This was confirmed later on when Paramount hired actress Ursula Corbero for the role.
I’ll be curious to see which Joe or Joes this next movie could be introducing to audiences. It was revealed that Australian actress Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Bill & Ted Face The Music) would be playing a new version of Scarlett, a character that could be deserving of a feature film.
Other potential characters that get a solo film could include Duke, Lady Jane, Roadblock, and Jinx.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins was set to be released on October 23rd, but it remains to be seen if Paramount will be able to stick to that release date.
A third main G.I. Joe film was said to be in development with Chuckles leading that film, however, it comes off like the studio might want to focus on introducing audiences to these new Joes first.
