Deadline reports that Australian director Julius Avery has signed on to direct Sly Stallone in MGM’s original superhero thriller Samaritan.
MGM has closed a deal with Julius Avery (Overlord) to direct Samaritan, a thriller that will be the next star vehicle for Sylvester Stallone. Shooting will begin early next year.
Based on an original idea, the thriller centers on a young boy who is out to discover if a mythic superhero, who vanished 20 years earlier following a tragic event, is still alive.
It’ll be interesting to see if the project is more in the realm of Brightburn or Kick-Ass, given that Stallone isn’t known for dark humor it’ll likely be the latter.
Julius Avery is likely best known for his WWII action horror movie Overlord for Bad Robot and had recently been attached to direct the Flash Gordon reboot for 20th Century Fox.
This news could possibly suggest that the Flash Gordon reboot has been placed on pause or scrapped entirely.
Stallone just released Rambo: Last Blood over the weekend and is still expected to shoot The Expendables 4 at some point as well. Sly has also teased a possible return to the MCU in Guardians of The Galaxy 3, which might not begin shooting until 2021.
