The other day it was revealed by TheHollywoodReporter that director Bryan Singer had been removed from the reboot of the 1985 fantasy film Red Sonja, which starred Bridigette Nielsen and is based on the fictional fantasy character created by Conan author Robert E. Howard.
Well, the outlet also recently spoke to the original Red Sonja, Brigitte Nielsen. She had some female directors already lined-up to suggest as possible replacements for Bryan Singer (this was before it was revealed he had exited the fantasy film). She mentions fantastic picks such as Danish director Susanne Bier (The Night Manager, Bird Box, In A Better World) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984, Monster).
“I hope Red Sonja is going to eventually move on. But why don’t they go with a great female director? Like Susanne Bier, a great Danish director? That would be fantastic! And she would put me in Red Sonja because I need to be in there! Or you could do Patty Jenkins! She’s an incredible director! This is a huge female character, and I can see a fantastic female director. Let me have my first project as a director! I’ll do it! (Laughs) I’m kidding. But a female director wouldn’t be a bad idea if Singer is eventually off the project for whatever is going to happen. I’m not one to say.”
I do think Susanne Bier is a wonderful suggestion and feels right for this level of production. I personally would love to see Destroyer’s Karyn Kusama, but I’m also not the one who played this character and Bridgitte might have a better idea who should take on the reigns since she likely knows the property better than myself.
With multiple Game of Thrones spin-offs on the horizon from HBO, Sony remaking Masters of The Universe, and Amazon working on their epic Second Age set Lord of The Rings Series, I feel like there is plenty of room for Red Sonja to find a place in the modern age of fantasy projects. I do hope this finds the right filmmaker because the character certainly deserves it.
Power-hungry Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman) captures the priestesses guarding the Talisman, a mystical orb that created and can destroy the world. But one of the priestesses escapes and seeks out her warrior sister, Red Sonja (Brigitte Nielsen), to warn her about Gedren’s plan for world domination. Lord Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger), the Talisman’s keeper, insists on helping Sonja, and though she scorns the assistance of any man, she soon gains respect for Kalidor’s fighting prowess.
