While the Sith Troopers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker seemed to be a whole lot of nothing, it looks like their name refers to something else that might be slightly cool.
The new visual dictionary for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker seemingly adds an Old Republic character to Star Wars’ official canon as one of the Sith Trooper units on the Sith Homeworld of Exegol is called “The 3rd: Revan Legion”, a direct nod to Darth Revan and other legions also adding many other Sith Lords to the canon.
Below is what the entry looks like in the latest book.
SITH TROOPER UNITS
“Sith trooper are organized into legions, using the ancient definition of 5,000 soldiers. These are numerically identified, but also given the name of an ancient Sith Lord. As this history was hidden from the rest of the galaxy, only the Sith Eternal cultists know the significance of these names.”
- THE 3RD: RAVEN LEGION
- THE 5TH: ANDEDDU LEGION
- THE 17TH: TANIS LEGION
- THE 17TH: TENEBROUS LEGION
- THE 39TH: PHOBOS LEGION
- THE 44TH: DESOLOUS LEGION
The inclusion of Darth Tenebrous is interesting as he was Darth Plagueis’ master and has lineage to Darth Bane. Palpatine aka Darth Sidus refers to Plageuis in Star Wars: The Revenge of Sith, who happens to be his master.
This wouldn’t be the first time that J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm giving nods to the video game mythology. As Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a big nod to The Force Unleashed games via Starkiller Base (also a homage to Luke’s original surname before being switched the more friendly Skywalker).
Revan has been hinted to before, Star Wars: The Last Jedi had an item called “Recovered Jedi Crusader Pendant” on the Jedi island planet of Anch-To that has a direct connection to Darth Revan as he was the first Jedi Crusader.
However, that tidbit didn’t directly name him like with the Sith Trooper Legion in the latest film.
You can check out that entry below.
Revan’s nod doesn’t automatically mean that we’ll see the character’s story told anytime soon but it’s nice that the people involved with the visual dictionaries and the films seemingly are wanting to tease The Old Republic stuff even its with little tidbits like these.
While Kathleen Kennedy confirmed to MTV at this year’s Star Wars Celebration they are developing something set during the Old Republic their official plans have yet to be announced.
Next month is said to see a director and project announcement for Star Wars 2022 from Lucasfilm/Disney (unconfirmed), that has been given a release date of December 16th, 2022. That project is said to be separate from what both Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige are developing.
BuzzFeed had reported earlier this year that the studio had tasked screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis (Altered Carbon, Shutter Island, Ghost In The Shell, Avatar, Alita: Battle Angel) for an Old Republic movie, that could become a trilogy.
An Old Republic film or series of films would be an excellent way to move past the Skywalker Saga and allow filmmakers to tackle a brand new era of Star Wars without preconceptions/expectations, that’s if they go with original stories (hopefully they don’t just rehash the video game mythology as it could lead to fan outrage again).
We’re certainly excited to see what Star Wars 2022 ends up becoming and how the Old Republic will factor into the future of the franchise.
